  • Three Principles of the IKON Program

    •                      IKON Courses

      Following the teachings of St. Newman, IKON Courses have three core elements:

      Faith:
      Christians must engage “religious truth”, i.e., their faith, to have a life integrated in relationships, work and holiness.

      Integral Knowing:
      Believers need Christian Knowledge: first principles and revealed truth found in the Creed and Christian culture that can be applied in daily living.

      Personal Influence:
      All Catholic Christians need in person formation.  Social media, podcasts, videos, lectures and books have a role in formation, but cannot replace a real integration morally, spiritually, and intellectually.

    •        Cor ad Cor Mentoring

      For students who want to go deeper in their IKON learning and to grow spiritually, we offer Cor ad Cor Mentoring (from St. Newman’s motto Cor ad Cor loquitor = heart speaks to heart).
      St. Newman believed that personal influence, Cor ad Cor,  was the surest way to communicate truth.
      1. Cor ad Cor mentoring begins with an IKON Temperament and Character Discernment;
      2. Cor ad Cor Mentoring sessions consist of a one hour scheduled 1 on 1 or small group tutorial with an IKON Professor;
      3. Mentoring sessions develop Cor Knowledge and Action, which includes a personalized approach to learning and growth in holiness.
    •                  IKon Teach

      The Newman Idea’s commitment to Personal Influence begins with teaching which is an art that includes instructing and educating.  IKON Teaching has three elements:
      1. The Ikonic Mind. TNI’s intensive program allows potential instructors to move beyond a specialty and develop knowledge that is integrated and expansive,
      2. Mastering the Art. IKON to teach from character and temperament, know when to experiment, and design assessments that allow students to integrate their knowledge.
      3. Teaching with Virtue. Teaching as a practical art requires the virtues of discernment, justice, courage, and equanimity.
  • Principles inspired By St. Newman

    • PERSONAL INFLUENCE

      Our guiding principle has been Newman's idea that the essence of the Gift of Integrity and of education is Personal Influence. One's education is partial if it is only about information delivery and assessment.  Here are a few inspiring quotes from Newman that have informed our practice:

      • [Whenever students] aim at something precise,  something refined, something really  luminous ... they avail themselves, in some  shape or other ... of present communication  between [person and person], of teachers  instead of learning, of the personal influence  of  a master, and the humble initiation of a  disciple.
      • [The] personal influence of the teacher is able in some sort to dispense with an academical system, but that the system cannot in any sort dispense with personal influence.  With influence there is life, without it there is none; if influence is deprived of its due position, it will not by those means be got rid of, it will only break out irregularly, dangerously.  An academical system without the personal influence of teachers upon pupils, is an arctic winter; it will create an ice-bound, petrified, cast-iron University, and nothing else." - Saint John Henry Newman
    • ON INTEGRAL KNOWING

      University training [as Integral Knowing]... is the education which gives men [and women] a clear conscious view of their own opinions and judgments, a truth in developing them, an eloquence in expressing them, and a force in urging them.  It teaches them to see things as they are, to go right to the point, to disentangle a skein of thought, to detect what is sophistical, and to discard what is irrelevant.

      It prepares them to fill any post with credit, and to master any subject with facility.  It shows them how to accommodate themselves to others, to know their state of mind, to bring other before their own, how to influence, how to come to an understanding with them, how to bear with them.
      - Saint John Henry Newman

The Newman Idea (TNI) is a religious and educational 501(c)(3) inspired by St. John Henry Newman, the great cardinal and patron of higher education.   TNI's mission is to teach the innovative IKON Program, which teaches Catholic students to think with faith as they seek truth.
