  •  ikon as your home: Ikon institutes

    • IKON Institutes integrate the grace of faith into communal living.

The Newman Idea seeks to establish and support IKON Institutes on secular campuses—small communities of students dedicated to prayer, study through IKON courses, work, and service.  Where possible, an IKON Institutes will provide a residence for students, so that they can live an integrated life of faith, knowledge, and service in community.

Each IKON Institute is established and supported by the Newman Idea, and its mission to form a relatively small community where students who desire to integrate their faith and knowledge through a holistic formation.  We are inspired in part by the Benedictine tradition of Ora et Labora, especially in Benedict of Aniane’s desire to replicate a form of spiritual and intellectual life.
    • "I wish [for students] to be at once oracles of philosophy and shrines of devotion… It will not satisfy me, if religion is here, and science there, and young people converse with science all day, and lodge with religion in the evening... I want the same roof to contain both the intellectual and moral discipline."

        • IKON Institutes seek partnerships with universities to provide interdisciplinary, accredited courses.

        • These courses are taught by credentialed professors who are further formed in integral knowledge by the Newman Idea.

        • Catholic students (or others interested in IKON courses) can take the classes to integrate their faith together with the varieties of knowledge, majors and programs found at their university.

        • The IKON community seeks to become a creative minority, an ikon of the Church within and to the University.

        WHAT STUDENTS ARE SAYING

“I look forward to the IKON discussions every week as my favorite class! I always leave the class feeling challenged to see my other course work and faith in a new way that brings me closer to Christ!” - Laughlin Grace

“IKON is one of the highlights of my week. It allows me to dive deeper into my faith and helps me to connect what we learn in class to my everyday life on campus. Without it, I would simply be taking advantage of the information taught in my classes rather than allowing my mind to wonder and make connections between my education and faith. It has been a grounding experience to be able to discus life, knowledge, and faith with a group of fellow Catholics on my campus and I would love to continue strengthening and growing the IKON community.” - Brooke Santagato, Tulane Class of 2020

“I did not plan for my senior year to end this abruptly and did not expect to say my goodbyes so suddenly; however, IKON going virtual gives me peace during this time as I know that my intellectual life does not have to take a pause. I can stay connected and deepen my faith with classmates and professors despite the circumstances.”
        - Chesna Climaco, Tulane Class of 2020

"IKON is helping us and I’m excited to see how that will be achieved, especially during these challenging times." - Neil Blanchard, FOCUS Missionary

        IKON IN ACTION
The Newman Idea launched our inaugural IKON Institute at Tulane University in New Orleans.

In the fall of 2019 seven (7) Tulane students enrolled in our first course: Going Global. The students loved the course and were thrilled at the progress they made in integrating their faith and their learning.

We doubled our number for the spring course: Wonder, Knowing, Being. Students have been engaged and excited to practice thinking with wonder and understanding the challenges materialism raises for Christian belief.

To the right, students and professors exercise wonder(ful) thinking to integrate their convictions with their majors.
